Connecticut’s Top Runners Taking On Best In New England

Release courtesy of Council of New England Secondary School Principals’ Association – The 82nd Annual New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championship is scheduled for Saturday, November 12th at Ponaganset High School, North Scituate, RI. The event is sponsored by the Council of New England Secondary School Principals’ Association (CNESSPA). The Boys’ race with begin at 11:30 am, followed by the Girls’ race at 12:30 pm. The field features the top 25 individual placers and the top 6 teams from the participating New England states (Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont).

Ponaganset High School offers a challenging 5000-meter course through trails. The Boys race features defending New England Champion, David Principe, Jr., a senior, who will be running in his home state. Principe leads defending team champions, La Salle Academy (RI) looking to win their fourth straight New England title. They will be challenged by rival Bishop Hendricken (RI), Champlain Valley (VT), Staples (CT), Falmouth (ME) and Nashua North (NH).

In the Girls competition, 2015 New England runner-up, Eleanor Lawler, a junior from South Kingstown (RI) is the top returner. Lawler, the Rhode Island champ, will face a tough challenge from New Hampshire champion, Jackie Gaughan (Exeter). Other challengers are state champions Morgan McCormick (Wilton-CT), Rena Schwartz (Green Mountain Valley-VT), and Abigail Hamilton (Yarmouth-ME). Champlain Valley (VT) looks to dethrone two-time defending New England champions La Salle Academy (RI). Other strong teams are Souhegan (NH), Ridgefield (CT), and Tolland (CT).
