2016-17 CAS-CIAC Battle of the Fans Winner
Congratulations to Notre Dame-West Haven
Thank you to all the schools that submitted entries for year three of the CAS-CIAC Battle of the Fans. We hope this event will continue to grow and foster the sort of sportsmanship, fan behavior, student leadership and student participation that will make schools, parents, athletes and CAS-CIAC proud, and the participation from our member schools in the first three years has been stellar.
The Notre Dame-West Haven Story
Oftentimes in a competition designed to highlight the best of a school, it’s worth taking all of the proclamations about the greatness of the school and the wonderful spirit with a grain of salt. But when the students of Notre Dame-West Haven talk about their “brotherhood” and how the enthusiastic and ultra-supportive energy that permeates the Green Machine in its submission video carries over into the school, it feels like something special. There is a passion and a love for the school the students express that is very hard to fake, and it’s that passion and “brotherhood” that stood out in this year’s Battle of the Fans competition.
The students at Notre Dame exude pride and that pride has carried into its student cheering section as that group has steadily grown. That growth has created even more excitement which has carried into the school itself and creates a supportive atmosphere where the students, faculty, staff, and administration are all in it together. They use the term “brotherhood” a lot, but it encompasses the feeling of family that powers the Notre Dame Green Machine.
Senior student-leader Michael Piechota may have said it best that at Notre Dame it’s about “sportsmanship, positivity, and sticking by your guys no matter what.” That is what the Green Machine is about, and it’s what earned them the distinction as the winners of the 2016-17 CAS-CIAC Battle of the Fans competition.
