The CIAC is sharing the tournament divisions information for the 2019-20 CIAC Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments.
Both boys and girls basketball will have five championship divisions for the season. The CIAC Boys Basketball Committee agreed to use the same formula which was used for the 2018-19 season. The system was created specifically with feedback from our member schools, and is different than the division placement used for any other tournaments which are nearly universally based on enrollment, whereas this formula incorporates success in tournament, league power, enrollment, and other factors using data from the past three seasons. The division placement from last season has no bearing on a school’s placement this year, the formula simply applies the last three years of data. The one structural change from the previous season is that Division I will now include 24 teams as opposed to 20 last year.

The CIAC Girls Basketball Committee elected to adopt a five-division format for the tournament on a one-year trial using the same criteria used for the previous year. The only variation will be the change to five divisions and the number of divisions a “school of choice” is moved up based on the “success in tournament” factor. As the Divisions will continue to be based on enrollment, the specific division placements will be released with the other winter sports next fall.
