Sports packets:

Each sport packet includes valuable information including tournament dates and entry procedures, playing rules including NFHS rule change and all other information regarding the administration of the specific sports. Points of interest and or confusion and emphasis from each packet are highlighted below, but coaches and administrators should familiarize themselves with the entirety of the packet, in particular relevant dates and entry deadlines and procedures.

  • Boys & Girls Soccer: Beginning this year, yellow cards accumulated during the regular season for individuals will be wiped clean before the start of league postseason play. Individual card totals will then be cleared again before CIAC postseason play begins. An individual player would have to collect three yellow cards either during the regular season, the league postseason, or CIAC postseason to be required to sit out a subsequent game.
  • Football: The football committee approved a proposal from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association to reduce the amount of permitted contact in practice by 50% for the fall season. Additional information will be provided on this change in the coming weeks. In addition, the use of a “success in tournament” factor for schools of choice has completed its trial phase and will now be a part of divisional determination going forward.
  • Girls Volleyball: For the second-consecutive year, CIAC will be hosting a regular season tournament event for Connecticut teams, which will take place on September 14. In addition teams are now permitted to schedule three tournament events as part of their schedule, which is an increase from the previously permitted two tournament dates.
  • Boys & Girls Cross Country: There were no significant changes to the sports packets for cross country, however it’s important to highlight that the cross country season begins earlier than the other fall sports. The first practice date for cross country is August 22, with a first contest date of September 5.
  • Field Hockey: Field hockey has approved changes to the overtime format for CIAC tournament games prior to the finals. Overtime will now feature up to two 10-minute seven-on-seven “sudden victory” overtime sessions. Should no winner emerge from that period, a “shoot-out” period has replaced penalty strokes to determine the winner. The full details for each period are listed in the sports packet.
  • Girls Swimming & Diving: The schedule for the State Open has been changed slightly for the 2019 season. The 2019 Open will take place on Sunday, November 24 at 2 p.m. at Kiphuth Pool at Yale University.
