#2 – Two key saves from Maya Rose help East Lyme secure girls lacrosse title

Any list of the most thankless positions in sports has to include girls lacrosse goalie. Defense in general seems to be an uphill climb in the sport, but the goalie position seems particularly unforgiving. The offense comes forward in waves of athletic, sharp-shooting attackers while the goalie holds down the defensive fort armed with slightly more protection, a larger stick, and their own reflexes and guile. Good luck. That’s not even taking into account free-position shots like the two featured in the clip below, in which the offense has earned a clear path and head start in coming at goal. Yet there is East Lyme goalie Maya Rose, standing tall on consecutive chances, eschewing whatever expectations that the offensive player has the advantage. Predicting how a game might unfold differently if certain instances change is folly, but it’s clear that these two saves by Rose came at key times to help preserve the East Lyme lead and to help the Vikings capture the title. A championship moment in which a team was certainly thankful it had someone as adept as Rose in the thankless goalkeeper role.
