For the past few weeks, CIACsports.com has been highlighting the best CIAC Network championship moments of the past year. We then asked for fans to weigh in on what moment they viewed as the best of the best. After nearly two weeks of voting, the results are in. Just as a refresher, you can see the choices for the best 2012-13 championship moment on the CIAC Network here: part 1; part 2; part 3; part 4; part 5; part 6. And without further adieu, here is what the fans chose as the top-five best moments from the past year, and we will do the countdown backwards to the top choice.
NUMBER 5- TIE – BOYS SOCCER/BASEBALL/GIRLS SOCCER
Even with the large number of votes that came in, it wasn’t enough to separate these three choices. Two of them provided winning moments right near the conclusion, while the other was a remarkable individual effort that proved to be the deciding moment. Three very worthy choices from the fans that are certainly deserving in the top five.
NUMBER 4 – SOFTBALL – OXFORD WALKS OFF
A remarkable weekend of championships for Oxford was one of the big stories of the spring, and the fans felt the walk-off win for the Oxford softball team was one of the most exciting moments of the past year.
NUMBER 3 – ICE HOCKEY – PENALTY SHOT DECIDES DII FINAL
All three of the hockey finals were remarkably taut contests, so choosing the best moment from that sport provided a tremendous challenge. The fans responded to the drama of a hockey final being decided on a penalty shot as Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe claimed the title.
NUMBER 2 – GIRLS BASKETBALL – MERCY PULLS OFF A MIRACLE
It was a shot and a game that those who saw it will never forget. Brilliantly diagrammed and executed, it was part of a spectacular day of basketball. And the fans weighed in that it deserved very high spot in the rankings.
NUMBER 1 – BOYS BASKETBALL – GRANBY PREVAILS IN 2OT THRILLER
The people have spoken. Perhaps Granby’s effort was overshadowed by the moment that ranked #2 on this list, perhaps because there was not one play that clearly won the game. But the moment below did cap a huge Granby comeback to send the contest into overtime in what turned out to be the first 2OT boys basketball final since 1989, and only the third basketball final to go more than one overtime. Add it all up, and Brent Buser’s big shot that kicked off an incredible day of hoops is a worth choice of the fans.
