CIAC Board of Control Report – 6/13/2014

ciacnewCHESHIRE, Conn. – The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Board of Control met to consider one voting item on Friday, June 13 2014.

On the one voting item the Board unanimously voted to deny a request from the Enfield public school district to begin the consolidation of the Enrico Fermi High School and Enfield High School athletic programs beginning in the fall of 2014, two years prior to the merging of the two schools.

“The CIAC’s by-laws regarding consolidation of athletic programs are designed to protect the well-being and interests of student-athletes and other member schools, and the Board did not feel there was sufficient justification in this instance to overrule the policies and grant this request,” CAS-CIAC Executive Director Karissa Niehoff stated. “The Board is extremely sensitive to the challenges the district face with the process of consolidating the schools and current budget concerns, but the members were unanimous in the opinion that consolidating the two athletic programs at this time was not a permitted option within CIAC rules.”

CIAC representatives informed Enfield school district Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Schumann of the Board’s decision after the conclusion of the meeting.

The CIAC Board of Control is not scheduled to meet again until Augusts 21, 2014.
