Apparently we had not done this in awhile, because this new edition of Linked Up is jam-packed with great stories. A reminder that this time of year, we try to stay away from team previews, simply because there are so many of them available (and fans should ABSOLUTELY check them out). Instead we focus on features on players or coaches, and there are some great ones to share today.
- From the Wall Street Journal: Incredibly touching story from a writer honoring his father who spent a lifetime as a coach. Have the tissues ready.
- From the Day of New London: Meagan Dreher is a successful athlete with a refreshing amount of perspective.
- From the Waterbury Republican-American: His work off the field is helping Kennedy’s Bryan Garcia-Medina on the gridiron.
- From the Norwich Bulletin: It’s still football and not chess for Griswold’s Matt Hoopes despite a pair of ACL injuries.
- From the Mercury News: A lengthy and interesting piece on whether or not current athletic training methods are working.
- From the Hartford Courant: It’s not often you get a feature about a cross country course as opposed to an athlete, but here is a rare example. Also from the Courant, this summer saw another highly-successful Aetna Women in Sports Symposium.
- From the Danbury News-Times: A new head coach is determined to spark a turnaround for New Milford football.
- From GameTimeCT: How well do you know record-breaking cross country runner Hannah DeBalsi? You will know more now. Also from GameTimeCT a look at how the North Branford field hockey team is working on team bonding.
- From the Cheshire Citizen: Some long-time football coaches have found their way back to the sidelines this fall.
- From the New Haven Register: The Hillhouse football team will be playing for much more than wins and losses this year.
- From The Ruden Report: Competitiveness has driven Westhill’s Emma Hart to success on the field hockey field. Also from Ruden Report, a look at how a cheerleading squad is preparing for the season.
- From NewsOK.com: Story on a college football coach who specifically recruits athletes that don’t specialize.
- From the Meriden Record-Journal: The new Sheehan athletic director sees good days ahead.
- From the Boston Globe: An in-depth piece on athletes choosing between high school or club/academy teams in soccer.
- From the Greenwich Time: Ten receivers to watch in Connecticut high school football this season.
- From Three Star Leadership.com: Lessons on leadership from a group that knows a few things about the topic.
- From the Connecticut Post: Though the lessons are being given to college athletes, they are well worth reading for high school student-athletes as well.
- From Grantland.com: Not really about high school sports, but an interesting look at the culture of masculinity in athletics.
