The Columbus Day holiday altered the start of the week slightly, delaying the launch of this week’s Rating Watch. Now that we are deep into the season it’s unusual to see moves of more than a few places, but taking a quick glimpse at what teams are climbing the rankings shows both which teams enjoyed big weeks, and which teams are trying to carry that momentum into the postseason (rankings and results do not take into account Monday’s games).

Boys Soccer:

  • Teams jumping up into the top-10 from outside that position was a recurring theme this week as Platt Tech climbed to eighth in L, Weston made that same move in M, and East Hampton did as well in class S.
  • Also making a substantial move was Daniel Hand which vaulted from 10th to fifth on the strength of a 2-0 week, while Simsbury now holds the fourth-place ranking in class LL after sitting in eighth last week.
  • Seymour enjoyed the biggest rise in M with a three-position leap from 10th to seventh.

Field Hockey:

  • Class M had a tumultuous week with teams rising and falling all over the place. The biggest risers were Pomperaug and Daniel Hand which both won three matches and are now third and fourth respectively after sitting in the bottom half of the top-10 last week.
  • In class L Darien and Hall both had 2-0 weeks to slide up three spots and are now in sixth and seventh respectively.
  • It was a mostly quiet week in S with only minor shifts among the top-10. Thomaston made the biggest positive move by climbing from eighth to sixth with a win. Lewis Mills and Stonington are one and two respectively in the rankings and are two of just three field hockey teams with unblemished records.

Football:

  • Still a large number of unbeaten teams in class S which means the rankings see a lot of shifting from week-to-week as the playoff points come into effect. Six unbeaten squads still remain and one of them is Canton which now sits atop the class after rising from fifth last week.
  • Class L also has a new team atop the rankings as Wethersfield jumped up from third, while Middletown burst into the top-10 at seven after being in an outside position last week.
  • LL did not see many large jumps though Southington, Newtown and Hall all shuffled spots near the top of the rankings, and Bristol Central moved into the top-10 at number nine.
  • Things also changed very little in class M where the Abbot Tech/Immaculate co-op rising into the top-10 at eighth was the largest move of the week within the top-10 rankings.

Girls Volleyball:

  • Two-position moves were the order of the week in girls volleyball as only a small collection of schools moved either up or down the rankings by more than two places. one of those was Sheehan which collected three wins on the week to climb from seventh in class M to fourth. Brookfield also moved significantly from outside the top-10 to eighth.
  • Also jumping comfortably from outside the top-10 into it was Fitch which is now seventh in class L, while at the top of those class rankings, RHAM and Bristol Eastern both had two-spot climbs and are now second and third respectively.
  • Class S saw Haddam-Killingworth move up one position to now sit atop the top-10 rankings while right behind them in second is Morgan which had a two-place rise from fourth.
  • In LL four different teams moved up two positions including the teams in third, fourth, and fifth (South Windsor, Amity, Simsbury). Glastonbury also was a two-spot riser, moving into seventh place in the rankings.

Girls Soccer:

  • There were some big movers in the upper half of the class LL rankings this past week as Middletown and Glastonbury both surged from lower positions to the top of the top-10. Middletown now sits in first after a three-win week moved them from fourth, and Glastonbury jumped from sixth to second also on the strength of three wins.
  • Class S was far quieter over the last seven days with two teams posting two-position raises as the biggest moves. Oxford slid up from sixth to fourth and Housatonic Regional is now sixth after ranking eighth a week ago.
  • In class M Berlin made a big move from 10th to fifth, while Rocky Hill is right below them in sixth after sitting outside the top-10 last week. Lewis Mills held its spot atop the rankings and is now the only unbeaten and untied team in girls soccer.
  • Class L was also fairly static this week with Masuk rising from fourth to second registering as the biggest positive climb. Familiar face Immaculate now sits in eighth place in L after ranking outside the top-10 a week ago.
