Spring Championship Tournament Histories & Links

Tournament CentralOne of the biggest weekends of CIAC competition is approaching fast, with 16 championship games taking place over Friday and Saturday. To help get everyone ready for the big weekend of action here are some handy links and tournament histories for all of the championship match-ups. Eleven contests will be streamed live on the NFHS Network, the baseball, boys volleyball and girls lacrosse finals will appear either live or in the coming days on CPTV Sports, and live stats will be provided for the boys and girls lacrosse finals. Below are some championship game tidbits and notes from the upcoming match-ups and we have all the tournament histories for the participants updated below.

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
  • History could be in the making at Palmer Field and Jonathan Law with schools attempting to extend championship streaks. Darien’s run of three-consecutive girls lacrosse titles are currently tied for the longest streak of consecutive titles, with its own run from 2007-2009. The same is true in the Class LL baseball final as Amity has earned three-consecutive crowns, and will look for a record-breaking fourth on Saturday. Its run of three-straight baseball championships is matched by Shelton’s run of three-straight from 1972-1974. Ridgefield in boys volleyball, New Canaan in girls lacrosse, Holy Cross in softball and Darien, New Canaan and St. Joseph in boys lacrosse are also trying to repeat as champions after winning last year.
  • St. Joseph boys lacrosse has also made some history as the lowest seed to ever reach a CIAC boys lacrosse final. The 18th-seeded Cadets are one spot lower than the previous low seed Wilton, which reached the final and claimed the championship as the 17th-seed in 2013.
  • History could also be made if all three boys lacrosse champions last year capture titles again. The same three teams have never captured consecutive titles in the 21-year history of the CIAC boys lacrosse championship.
  • Trying to bounce back from a championship loss a season ago will be the theme for several of the teams taking part in finals this weekend. A total of seven teams reached the finals last year, only to come up short, and will try to go one step farther this season. Joel Barlow and Darien boys volleyball, Morgan and East Lyme baseball, Cheshire and Fitch softball, and Daniel Hand in boys lacrosse are all trying to capture titles after coming close a year ago.
  • Speaking of boys volleyball, the class match-up between Ridgefield and Darien is one of two rematched from a 2015 final on the slate for the weekend. In fact, three of the four participants in the boys volleyball finals were there a season ago, with only South Windsor crashing the party as a newcomers. The other rematch comes in Class M boys lacrosse where Daniel Hand and New Canaan square off again after New Canaan captured the title last year.
  • That Class M boys volleyball final is one of three games where we are guaranteed to see a first-time champion. Both Joel Barlow and South Windsor are looking for a first boys volleyball title. The same is true in Class M baseball where Wolcott is appearing in the championship game for the first time and Northwestern has yet to claim a title in its previous trips. Class S girls lacrosse will also have a first-time champ with both Canton and Somers having never claimed a girls lacrosse title.
  • Overall there are 12 teams looking for a first title. Along with the six listed above, Cheshire and Notre Dame-Fairfield softball, Fairfield Warde girls lacrosse, Daniel Hand and Simsbury boys lacrosse, and Morgan baseball are trying to pick up the championship hardware for the first time.
  • On the opposite spectrum are several teams who at the least have been very frequent visitors to the championship game, with double-digit appearances. Darien girls lacrosse is reaching double figures this year with its 10th trip to the finals, while there are two softball teams who have made many trips to the finals. Amity’s LL berth is its 14th trip to the title game, while Seymour comes in as the most veteran finals participant as this is its 17th trip to the softball finals. Darien boys lacrosse is playing in its 13th state final and New Canaan has also reached double figures with its 12th finals trip this year.
