This was Bunnell’s first state championship in school history and its first appearance.

“We took care of business and I’m happy for our team,” Bunnell coach Pat Yerina said.

Spann hit back-to-back three-point shots late in the third quarter, the last giving the Bulldogs (24-4) the lead for good at 40-37. Bunnell put the game away with an 11-4 run in the fourth quarter to move ahead 67-54.

Guard Ryan Pittman finished with 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds in his final game for the Bulldogs.

Jarron Chapman had a game-high 29 points for Naugatuck (21-6) on 13-of-28 shooting from the floor. Naugatuck was playing in its first state final since 1974 and seeking its first championship since 1942.

“It’s tough to put into words on it, as to how proud I am of those boys in that locker room,” Wilson said.
