CIAC Football 2015 Championship History & Links

ciacnew_fb20152015 Football Championship Histories & Notes

It all comes down to this. Four CIAC football championship games this weekend, wrapping up more than a month of Connecticut high school championships. The match-ups are set and we provide a few tidbits on the teams and games going into the weekend, followed by the complete championship history for all of the teams taking part.

  • Ansonia and Bloomfield square off in the Class S championship game this weekend, which marks the sixth time those two programs have met in a football final. That is the most in Connecticut football history, moving it past games between Ansonia and New London which have also taken place on five occasions. Daniel Hand vs. New Canaan, Darien vs. New Canaan and Greenwich vs. New Britain are next on the list for most common championship match-ups having all taken place three times.
  • Two of the eight teams taking part this weekend are looking for a first CIAC football crown. New Fairfield lost its only previous appearance in a CIAC football title game, while North Haven is making a first trip to the football finals and trying to earn a first championship.
  • Five teams are making consecutive trips to a football final. Leading the way is Ansonia which is in a final for a 6th straight season. New Canaan, Darien and Brookfield are making three-straight trips to a final, while Shelton is back for a second year in a row.
  • Four of the eight participants this weekend come in with historical winning records in CIAC finals. Shelton, New Canaan, Ansonia and Bloomfield are all over .500 in their previous trips to state finals.
  • Brookfield and New Fairfield’s Class M contest marks the only regular season rematch among the four finals this year. It marks the third consecutive year the finals have featured at least one rematch of a regular season contest.
  • New Canaan is trying to join some elite company with a third-straight CIAC football title on Saturday. It would mark the 11th time a program has won at least three-consecutive football championships. The Rams themselves did it from 2006-2009 giving them four-straight crowns, and the longest run of football titles is Cheshire’s streak of six-consecutive titles from 1992-1997.
