Boys Ice Hockey Committee Minutes – 3/3/16

CIAC ICE HOCKEY COMMITTEE
PENALTY REPORT REVIEW / PAIRINGS
March 3, 2016

Present: Al Cramer, Dave Eustis, Sal Follo, Dave Harackiewicz, Ken Henrici, Tom Malin, Drew Pettola, Steve Richetelli, Marty Roos, Bob Russell, Steve Trifone, Rob Melanson, Drew Pettola, Tom Neagle, George Hall, Joe Tonelli and Steve Wysoski (CIAC staff).

The meeting was called to order by Tom Neagle at 12:15 p.m.

The main purpose of the meeting was to review the penalty reports submitted by all schools. Tom Neagle shared the good news with the committee that the number of penalties above a minor, were significantly down from last year, which is a credit to the coaches, officials and most especially the players. He also stated that the preliminary report from Rob Melanson (as of March 3) indicates that no team will be eliminated from the 2016 tournament as a result of major penalties. Steve and Rob from NIHOA were present to clarify any rulings when necessary. Tom Neagle will formulate the status report and review it at the April meeting.

It should be noted that an unofficial pairings meeting was conducted because all the regular season schedules were completed. George confirmed that all teams are set for the 2016 tournament and all the brackets were fill to 16 teams and ranked as per the CIAC rules and regulations. George reviewed the pairings and by unanimous consent the 16 team tournament was ratified in all three (3) divisions. George also distributed the March tournament calendar and solicited the assistance of the committee to cover games. Yale is not available for the quarter-finals; Bridgeport was mentioned as a possible site if the match-ups were right. We are also awaiting the results of the Trinity College women’s ice hockey team this weekend which will determine the availability of that site for a possible quarter-final match-up.

George confirmed that longtime New Canaan hockey coach “Bo” Hickey will be present for the tournament dedication and luncheon, which will be held at approximately 12:00 Noon at Ingalls Rink.

With all our business completed there was no need for the committee to meet on Friday. The pairings will be officially announced to the public on Friday as planned.

Tom also informed the committee that NIHOA rules interpreter, Rob Melanson will be stepping down from that position after this year. Tom thanked Rob for his many years of service and for the timely reports he provided that enabled CIAC to keep a handle on the schools that needed a reminder from Tournament Director, George Hall. Rob will be missed and we are pleased that he will remain part of the NIHOA organization.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m. The next meeting will be held on March 22, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. to formulate the proposed divisions for the 2016-17 season.
