MaxPreps - Top Sleepers In CIAC Baseball Tournaments

    June 3rd, 2016

The philosopher Plato had a way with words and knew a little something about numbers, too. Of the latter, he said, "A good decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers." Plato's opinion of numbers applies to CIAC tournament rankings. Teams that play in weaker conferences may end up with a top seed. A team that plays against tougher competition may be seeded lower, but they're often better prepared for states and knock off a[...]

    2015-16 Season Limitations Changes

    November 12th, 2014

In August the CIAC Board of Control approved changes for the season limitations and practice dates for the 2015-16 season beginning in the fall 2015. The changes were approved after the 2014-15 CIAC Handbook went to print, therefore the on-line edition has incorrect dates listed for 2015-16. The CIAC has attempted to share the correct dates as widely as possible and they will be correct in the next edition of the CIAC Handbook, but in[...]

Overwhelming Pitching Pushes Two Teams To State Titles

Overwhelming Pitching Pushes Two Teams To State Titles

    June 12th, 2013

The cliché is that when it comes to baseball and softball tournaments, having dominant pitching is the biggest difference maker. Like any cliché, it arises from a combination of truth, history, and selective memory. Browsing through the recent history of CIAC baseball and softball tournaments – over the past 10 years – tournament champions have as often as not been earned on the strength of powerful offenses, a strong bullpen, timely hits, and even a[...]

    May 20th, 2013

Previous Eye On The CIAC posts have suggested the spring season was winding down, and this week it officially winds down with brackets and tournament play commencing at the late of the week. As such, the focus of most of this look back at last week are teams fighting to reach the the .400 winning percentage mark that teams need to earn a spot in the championship brackets. Boys Lacrosse: Shelton earned a key win early in[...]

    May 13th, 2013

Nothing out of the ordinary with this edition of Eye On The CIAC, though there was a record breaking moment from the East Lyme softball team. Teams have begun to clinch league titles and those championships are on the horizon, and the implications of every game starts to carry even more significance. As always Eye On The CIAC attempts to track a few noteworthy games over the past week. Girls Tennis: On Monday in a pivotal FCIAC[...]

    May 10th, 2013

Last week Linked Up featured primarily local sports, but this week there are some great stories both in and out of state. Really enjoy profiles on seniors who are working hard as their high school athletics careers come to a close. From the New London Day: An NFA senior is enjoying his final run on the track before his college cross country career. From the Coloradoan: A very nice piece about the life-long friendships that are often built[...]

    Eye On The CIAC

    May 6th, 2013

A rare spring week with virtually no rain led to a very busy week of competition. With May now underway, the CIAC rankings have stabilized a bit as is evident in the Rankings Watch section, and there were a lot of close and noteworthy results from the past week. Boys Volleyball: Wethersfield opened its week with a hard-fought 3-2 over Simsbury. After opening the season 1-2, Wethersfield has reeled off five-straight wins with each of the last[...]

    May 3rd, 2013

After a week hiatus, Linked Up is back with a nearly all Connecticut lineup. Only one national story this week, as the focus is on some really interesting features from around the state. From the Stamford Advocate: Many folks are in awe of twins Ellie and Sam Gravitte who star on and off the field for Ridgefield. From the Hartford Courant: Two long-time tennis coaches at Bristol Eastern are nearing retirement. Also from the Courant the RHAM girls[...]

The calendar is about to flip to May, which means there is just about a month to go in the high school season. Plenty of exciting action as the spring seasons really start to take shape and some compelling results from the past week. Softball: Berlin picked up a win on Monday by a 3-1 score over Bristol Eastern to remain unbeaten on the season. Makayla Harris went the distance for Berlin, allowing only three hits and[...]

With that, we have a full edition of Eye on the CIAC taking a look at some of the action around the state. Boys Lacrosse: Bethel and Newington engaged in a spirited game on Monday afternoon, with Bethel emerging with an 8-7 win in double overtime. It was a fourth-straight win for Bethel after opening the[...]

    Linked Up - 4/19/13

    April 19th, 2013

This edition of Linked Up is admittedly a bit maudlin and sentimental. As this sentence is typed, there is a manhunt going on in the Boston area, in the days following a heartbreaking tragedy. Yet as has been frequently pointed out these terrible events often bring out the best in humanity as people pull together. Similarly, when talented writers tackle the immense emotion in such situations, it produces brilliant and touching pieces of writing. Which[...]

    Eye On The CIAC

    April 15th, 2013

A rainy close to the week (at least on Thursday and Friday) put a bit of a damper on the week's activity, but there were still plenty of interesting contests to take a look at. Girls Lacrosse: A great early season battle with Danbury outlasting Fairfield Ludlowe 14-13 in overtime to open the week. Bunnell and Notre Dame-Fairfield played a tight game in what turned out to be a rare defensive showcase with Bunnell pulling out the 5-4[...]

    April 12th, 2013

Not a huge week for links as most of the focus is on game stories these days as there are plenty of great games going on. Also lots of coverage for college sports in the state at the moment, and with good reason (a much-deserved congrats to the UConn women's basketball team, and the Quinnipiac and Yale ice hockey teams). With that said, there is still plenty of good stuff here to check out. From the[...]

It has been awhile since Eye on the CIAC provided a glimpse at the action taking place across the state. Spring sports officially kicked off with competition on Wednesday April 3, and at times the weather almost felt spring-like the past few days. The Eye will focus a bit more on key match-ups as the seasons progress, but for this first edition, the primary factor was games with narrow margins of victory. There is four[...]

A hefty edition of Linked Up as the CIAC spring sport season has officially begun. The coverage around the state from news outlets currently includes extensive previews (leagues, players to watch, games, team blurbs, etc.) and fans are strongly encouraged to check out those detailed previews. For Linked Up, the stories are limited to features, and previews of specific teams. From the Hartford Courant: A broken hand? Not a problem for Simsbury track performer Maddi Nicholson (a[...]

There is a bit of a lull in the high school sports calendar in terms of game action, but there are still plenty of worthy stories across the state. From the Stamford Advocate: Emotions were running high as participants ran for an incredibly worth cause in Hartford. From the Danbury News[...]

From the Hartford Courant: A big cross country invitational this weekend is in honor of coaching legend Harry Geraghty. Don't want these "Linked[...]
