Not a huge week for links as most of the focus is on game stories these days as there are plenty of great games going on. Also lots of coverage for college sports in the state at the moment, and with good reason (a much-deserved congrats to the UConn women's basketball team, and the Quinnipiac and Yale ice hockey teams). With that said, there is still plenty of good stuff here to check out. From themore»

A Football Title Is One Play Away

    December 13th, 2012

Momentum can be a funny thing, particularly in the context of a sporting event. It can build slowly over the course of a game, as a team slowly takes control. Or it can happen suddenly, shifting from one team to another in a matter of one play. It is not always easy to tell if or when that elusive momentum has found its way into one team’s corner. That was not the case at the 2012 Cmore»

One week away. Seven days. Approximately 168 hours (or 10,080 minutes). You get the idea. That is how long the anxious student-athletes, coaches, parents, fans and anyone else must wait before the 2012 high school sports season kicks off. It has been a long time coming for these teams and athletes and they are no doubt anxious to get started. With that in mind, here is a look at what is being written around themore»

As expected, the frequency of team previews in the media are heating up as the start of the high school sports season inches closer. And there is a wide variety to sample today. The first story, however, is not a preview but rather an important piece from the Danbury News-Times about the growing use of steroids among female high school students. A very interesting story, particularly the notion that bucks conventional wisdom that steroids are always used more»

    Fun With Numbers

Start with this; this exercise means absolutely nothing. Breaking down what happened in the past is a fun pastime, but it needs to be clear that there is little to no predictive value in this endeavor. It can just be a fun endeavor to take a look at history to try and find interesting trends, although in this case having more years of data would be even more helpful. Either way, here is a breakdown of the smore»

One of the new regular features of the new CIACsports.com will be to provide a sampling of the fine coverage of local high school sports by the Connecticut media. In most cases this will never be an all encompassing effort, and there are stories that will be missed. It is simply an attempt to put some more eyes on some of the interesting stories being told around the state. This will surely increase in themore»

Football is a sport with inherent dangers, including the risk of head and neck injuries. Equipment manufacturers have stepped forward with various products intended to address such risks. Questions arise from time to time as to whether a given product may, rather than diminishing the incidence of injuries, in fact enhance it. There has been some discussion lately about the efficacy of attachments to the exterior of football helmets. Until this year, we were unaware ofmore»

With that in mind, it seems the perfect time to take a brief look at the recent CIAC Tournament results to get a feel formore»
