#4 – Southington holds off late rally to capture state softball title

Dramatic championship moments can emerge and develop a lot of different ways. In the case of the 2019 Class LL softball final between Southington and Norwich Free Academy, a relentless Southington offense had seemingly drained most of the drama from the contest, building a comfortable 7-3 lead entering the final frame. NFA had other plans. The Wildcats clawed their way back in the seventh, pulling within a single run and getting the tying run into scoring position with just one out. That, is certainly a dramatic and tension-filled moment. But Southington freshman hurler Samantha Sullivan stood tall under the tension, getting a critical strikeout for out number-two, and then getting the final batter to foul out to clinch the championship. It was more dramatic, perhaps, than Southington would have liked, but it created an indelible moment that earned it the 4th spot in the Moments Vote.
