The brackets have been whittled down and the spring sports championship season will conclude with a bonanza of games over the next few days. Below we have provided a historical breakdown of each team’s success in the respective tournaments, to provide some context for what will take place this weekend. Along with that, there are several interesting little tidbits found by digging through the championship match-ups and their history. As such, here are a few of the quick items catching our attention heading into the weekend.

  • As two perennially strong programs in baseball and softball, Southington and Amity are both no strangers to baseball and softball championships. However the schools are making a bit of history this year as the match-up between the Spartans and Blue/Lady Knights in the baseball and softball finals marks the first time since the CIAC began crowning softball champions in 1974 that both the baseball and softball finals have featured a showdown between the same two schools. Now we see if either team can earn the championship double?
  • Or could it be a triple? One year after Oxford pulled off the rare feat of earning titles in boys volleyball, softball, and baseball in the same year, Southington will have a chance to match that feat.
  • Darien and New Canaan are certainly not unfamiliar with each other as the next-door rivals will meet in a boys lacrosse championship for the third time. Interestingly, the two rivals are providing a nice bookend to the 2013-14 sports season as they also renewed their rivalry in the class L football championship, where New Canaan prevailed. In fact, that isn’t even the only football championship rematch lacrosse fans will see on Saturday at Brien McMahon High School, as the class S battle between St. Joseph and Brookfield features the same two schools as the 2013 class M football final. Time will tell whether the results from the fall will repeat on Saturday.
  • Speaking of Brookfield boys lacrosse, the team is one of three teams appearing in a specific sport final for the first time in program history. The top seed Rocky Hill baseball team and the Stonington girls lacrosse team are also both getting a first crack at a title in the respective sports.
  • In a similar vein, there are three finals this weekend that guarantee a first-time champion. Rocky Hill in its first appearance in that class M baseball final faces Haddam-Killingworth which has gone winless in four previous finals appearances. Similarly Stonington girls lacrosse team in its first appearance in a final squares off against Granby Memorial which is 0-2 in championship matches. And both Staples and Greenwich’s boys lacrosse programs have made two previous trips to championship matches and have come up empty both times.
  • The only tournament in which the seeding held all the way to the finals is the class M boys volleyball contest in which top seed Newington squares off with second seed and defending champion Oxford. It is the only #1 vs. #2 match-up of the busy championship weekend.

Those are just a few facts and oddities to whet the appetite and track this weekend. Here is the full bit of championship history for all 32 teams taking part. Enjoy the weekend, and congratulations to all the teams taking part.
