Girls Volleyball Committee Minutes – 3/14/16

March 14, 2016

Present: Craig Brown, Tim Guernsey, Rich Heitz, Susie Miner, Heidi Schmidt, Laura Arena, Bob Lehr.

The first order of business was a review of the 2015 tournament. All went well at the tournament, but it was obvious that as girls volleyball continues its growth that a facility capable of handling increasingly larger crowds will be required.

The committee voted to move the semi-finals to Tuesday and Wednesday instead of Wednesday and Thursday. The committee also voted to determine the alignment of games for the finals scheduled for Saturday, November 19 after the semi-final games conclude. That alignment will be determined by the tournament director.

Jeanne Cooper has resigned as the tournament director. A new tournament director will be named shortly.

Motion by Heidi Schmidt and seconded by Tim Guernsey to require schools to have flags available for the lines officials. Motion passed.

There was discussion on the length of games for freshman and junior varsity games. There was also discussion on warm-up times as well as scores of sub-varsity games when teams arrive late. The committee decided to keep the language for late arriving teams as is stated in the packet.

The committee reviewed the tournament packet and adjustments will be reflected in the revised packet.

Rich Heitz brought up a request to study power ranking for girls volleyball. Rich stated that volleyball has grown and that the committee should be constantly looking at ways to improve the high school tournament. Bob Lehr will discuss this with Matt. It was also decided that the 2016 season would be used to study the power rankings.

Several coaches had questions on the NFHS rule related to solid colored shirts. Coaches are directed to Jim Borbas for a determination of the legality of a shirt in question.

The meeting concluded at 4:50 p.m.
